這時(shí)候，我腦子里突然產(chǎn)生一個(gè)強烈的、不可抗拒的欲望：我要找個(gè)仆人，現在正是時(shí)候；說(shuō)不定我還能找到一個(gè)侶伴，一個(gè)幫手哩。這明明是上天召喚我救救這個(gè)可憐蟲(chóng)的命呢！我立即跑下梯子，拿起我的兩支槍--前面我已提到，這兩支槍就放在梯子腳下。然后，又迅速爬上梯子，翻過(guò)山頂，向海邊跑去。我抄了一條近路，跑下山去，插身在追蹤者和逃跑者之間。我向那逃跑的野人大聲呼喚。他回頭望了望，起初仿佛對我也很害怕，其程度不亞于害怕追趕他的野人。但我用手勢召喚他過(guò)來(lái)，同時(shí)慢慢向后面追上來(lái)的兩個(gè)野人迎上去。等他倆走近時(shí)，我一下子沖到前面的一個(gè)野人跟前，用槍桿子把他打倒在地。我不想開(kāi)槍?zhuān)聵屄曌屍溆嗟囊叭寺?tīng)見(jiàn)。其實(shí)距離這么遠，槍聲是很難聽(tīng)到的；即使隱隱約約聽(tīng)到了，他們也看不見(jiàn)硝煙，所以肯定會(huì )弄不清是怎么回事。第一個(gè)野人被我打倒之后，同他一起追來(lái)的那個(gè)野人就停住了腳步，仿佛嚇住了。于是我又急步向他迎上去。當我快走近他時(shí)，見(jiàn)他手里拿起弓箭，準備拉弓向我放箭。我不得不先向他開(kāi)槍?zhuān)粯尵桶阉蛩懒?。那逃跑的野人這時(shí)也停住了腳步。這可憐的家伙雖然親眼見(jiàn)到他的兩個(gè)敵人都已經(jīng)倒下，并且在他看來(lái)已必死無(wú)疑，但卻給我的槍聲和火光嚇壞了。他站在那里，呆若木雞，既不進(jìn)也不退，看樣子他很想逃跑而不敢走近我。我向他大聲招呼，做手勢叫他過(guò)來(lái)。他明白了我的意思，向前走幾步停停，又走幾步又停停。這時(shí)，我看到他站在那里，混身發(fā)抖。他以為自己成了我的俘虜，也將像他的兩個(gè)敵人那樣被殺死。我又向他招招手，叫他靠近我，并做出種種手勢叫他不要害怕。他這才慢慢向前走，每走一二十步便跪一下，好像是感謝我救了他的命。我向他微笑，作出和藹可親的樣子，并一再用手招呼他，叫他再靠近一點(diǎn)。最后，他走到我跟前，再次跪下，吻著(zhù)地面，又把頭貼在地上，把我的一只腳放到他的頭上，好像在宣誓愿終身做我的奴隸。我把他扶起來(lái)，對他十分和氣，并千方百計叫他不要害怕。但事情還沒(méi)有完。
